How To Make A Gingerbread House

This year was all about making new Christmas traditions for myself. As I live by myself and only get together with my family over Christmas, I believe it is important for me to make this season my own. In late November, I decided to buy a gingerbread house making kit. I’ve never built one before and I wanted to try something new. I felt like a kid that just got a new toy. Did you know that some gingerbread houses can’t be eaten? They are there for decoration only! Why? Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to make it at home so I packed the kit into my suitcase and brought it to the US with me.

I always enjoyed the Christmas season as a child. The older I have become, the less that essence has been around. As I have realised that the magic of Christmas is dependent on your personal conscious effort, I am starting to do the work. I’m putting in the effort to continue making the season just as magical and more for myself. This year I’m putting a lot more effort into trying new activities and getting into the joy of spending the most of the season on my own. Regardless if you are single or not, make the season as magical as you want it to be. What magical looks like is dependent on the individual. As long as you are doing something that is intentional and authentic to you, that is all that matters. With self-compassion, mindfulness and a little effort, you can make this an empowering season for yourself.

My Experience Building A Gingerbread House

Despite it being messy and sticky, I had a lot of fun. It’s not perfect yet it is my own version of imperfection. As I’m operating on two different timezones, I decided to build the house first thing in the morning. If I got the paste to water ratio correct after putting it together, it may have looked beautiful. I guess I can try again next time.

I used one egg white and the sugar powder that came in the box. If you have a sweet tooth, you might like the paste but I found it way too sweet. Next, I set up the gingerbread house on some kitchen roll and got building. It was a struggle getting the distances correct between the wall because the roof is not sitting the way it was supposed to sit. As I continued chiseling away at it, I realised where I made the mistakes.

Either way, it was a fun experience. I added too much water to the remainder of the paste so I couldn’t do some exterior designs. If you have never tried doing this, I recommend trying it this year or adding this to your list of activities for next year.

A short and sweet blog post for today. We have two more days of Blogmas and I have no idea how we got here so fast! I remember thinking that this was going to be so much work before I got started and here we are on Day 23. If you haven’t been following Reelsmas on Instagram, check that out as the content for this challenge is not the same as Blogmas.

Until next time,
