Autumn Home Decor: How To Style Your Space?

For the last few years, I’ve been inspired by other bloggers. Inspired by them decorating their spaces for autumn. Seasonal cozy finds such as candles, plaid throws and small home decor bits to bring the season into their homes. Last year, I decided that I wanted to try something out of my comfort zone in 2022. I created a home decor fund so save up some money and try my hand at decorating my flat for the seasonal months. When the weather shifts outside, I get excited to switch up my style and search for new clothing to match the season. For my home, I’m sticking to the traditional colours and textures that are associated with these autumn/harvest months.

As this is my first time doing adding some seasonal home decor to my flat, I want to keep it simple. Yet tasteful and according to my aesthetic and style. More isn’t always better, you know? For my first try at this, I decided to choose pieces that I could use for the upcoming years and build upon for other seasons. It’s all about longevity and sustainability with me.

Autumn Colours and Shades

How to style your space with autumn home decor is all about the colours and shades for me. I think about the colours I align with the season and the items that you can find in nature. Shades of brown, orange, yellow, red and green are on the leaves and the ground when they fall. Natural materials like pinecones, conkers, chestnuts, wicker and wheat will be seen throughout the months of October and November. When it came to decorating my space, I created a list with these colours and materials so I knew what to look out for when I went shopping.

Cozy Autumn Feels

Plaid is autumn. I don’t care what anyone says, I believe that it was made for this season and this season only. One of my favourite things to do is to sit on my couch, wrapped up in a blanket, with a cup of tea or hot chocolate, watching a movie. I tend to use my duvet in my bedroom but I wanted blankets specifically for the living room. Plaid throw blankets have entered the scene. You can’t go wrong with different coloured plaid blankets: reds, oranges, greys, yellows etc. Not only are they going to add colour and life into the room, but also they will add more light as we go into the colder and darker months.

You can also add cozy autumn-styled pillows to your bedroom and living room. They can be different colours, plaid-styled pillows or pillows with autumn or ‘hello fall’ written on them. I opted not to do that this year as I wanted something simple.

Autumn Home Decor Accents

In order to create a festive feel to my living room, I’m looking to add some accent pieces that celebrate the season. Pumpkins of different shades, sizes and characteristics are a great way to enter the transition from summer into autumn. Pumpkins with scars and different shapes add a little more character to a display. One thing about this season is that not everything changes at once. Having accent pieces that follow the transition of the change creates that full picture.

Another home decor accent piece is a wreath or a festive garland filled with autumn foliage. I think this would be great for a TV stand, a mantel, a bookshelf or over a fireplace.

Let’s talk about candles as they are the finishing touches to styling my space with autumn home decor. I always opt for scented candles that bring those favourite and nostalgic scents into my home. Each room in my flat has its own candle. As you move from one room to another, you can transported into different atmosphere with its own scents. My favourite scents for autumn are: cinnamon, apple, nutmeg or a hint of vanilla. When it comes to candle notes, I look for: oud, sandalwood, amber, clove, sugarcane and a little bit of tobacco. Tobacco reminds me of firewood and I associate fireplaces with this season.

Here are my simple and affordable style tips to your autumn home decor this year. I hope that these ideas inspired and motivated you to give it a try in your home. It can be stressful when the seasons change. Having an exciting project like changing up the decor and adding warmth and comfort into your space can make the transition smoother.
