My Top Ten Greatest Christmas Songs On My Playlist

Usually I start listening to Christmas music as soon as it hits 1st December. This year, I have listened to it sporadically, that might change in the next few days. I think it’s because I’m so focused on planning my 30th birthday that it hasn’t hit me to listen to it all the time. Christmas time is my birthday season and my reflection season all wrapped up into one. Even though I am more of a Christmas movie type of girl, there are some Christmas songs that I listen to on repeat for the entire month of December.

Music is one of those things that transcends time. When I was a child, every Saturday my dad would play one of his records and we would sing along, dance around while we cleaned the house. The music would vary depending on the time of year and the mood we were in. We would listen to Yoruba and Igbo Highlife, jazz, old school RnB, and at Christmas time, classic Christmas songs from Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby to name a few. Today I’m going to share my top ten greatest Christmas songs. It was not easy to limit this to only ten songs but I managed to. They include some classics and some new editions from a variety of genres.

Classic Christmas Songs

  1. Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song

I’ve been listening to Nat King Cole’s Christmas music before I left the womb. I don’t remember when I first started recognising his music but you can hear it everywhere in shopping centres. He fits more into the Jazz genre but I believe that his seasonal music is iconic and can be considered as classic Christmas songs. If you haven’t taken the time to experience his music, you are missing out.

2. Bing Crosby – White Christmas

Bing Crosby is another classic that you should add to your playlist. He and Nat King Cole’s music were out in the early 20th Century. The reason that the old classics resonate with me is because these artists had a talent. They were musicians and performers. We don’t really have a lot of those in today’s music scene anymore. Talent counted for something.

3. Dean Martin – Winter Wonderland

I can’t believe that I nearly forgot about Dean Martin! I’m so embarrassed! There were so many to choose from but I had to go with ‘Winter Wonderland’. His music is filled with so much fun and laughter. Definitely an artist to listen to if you want to jump head first into Christmas.

Contemporary Songs

4. Michael Bublé – It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

No holiday playlist is complete without Michael Bublé, you cannot convince me otherwise! It is one of the best Christmas albums out there. Every song is a hit!

5. Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

I don’t really think this song needs an explanation. It’s been a hit since I heard it in primary school. I don’t even have to play this song on Spotify because I hear it all the time on social media, at the Christmas market, at work holiday parties etc.

Country Songs

6. Martina McBride – O Holy Night

Country music isn’t really my go-to genre but ever since I heard this song five years ago, I have dipped in and out into that genre. Martina McBride is an American country singer and her entire Christmas album is one of my favourites. Her voice is so powerful and the range that she sings in is incredible.

7. Carrie Underwood – Little Drummer Boy

The fact that I have two songs under country music is wild! Once I listen to her Carrie’s Christmas music, it opened me up to her other music. Little Drummer Boy is one of the few songs that has the nativity element and the true meaning of the season at the centre. The way that Carrie put her heart in this song was extremely powerful. Although, I can’t sing as great as she can, I still put the same amount of heart into it when I sing along.

RnB Christmas Songs

8. City High – O Come All Ye Faithful

This is the newest one on my playlist. I remember listening to a podcast and one of the hosts mentioned that this was her favourite to listen to during this season. I had never heard of this group before so naturally, I gave them a try. This is the only song of theirs that I have listen to and I can see why the host said it was her favourite. Not going to spoil it for you but you should have a list.

9. The Temptations – Silent Night

The Temptations can be classed as RnB but I find them more to be soul and a lot of soul did they bring to ‘Silent Night’. I mean they sang this song under Motown Records, one of the most successful and popular music labels out there. There is no doubt that this song brought a lot of life!

10. Boyz II Men & Brian McKnight – Let It Snow

This song always reminds me of The Best Man Holiday and I play this on repeat. I’ve always loved Boyz II Men and Brian McKnight, this collaboration was one that we didn’t know that we needed. The RANGE in their voices is all that needs to be said.

These are the greatest Christmas songs on my holiday playlist that I think you may like too. I play all theses songs on repeat throughout the month of December. I’ve also discovered new songs through my work playlist with my colleagues and I’m open to hear more from you.
