Is it just me? Every winter whenever we change the clocks back, I’m always wishing for the sun to come out a little more. Winter can be long, cold and dreary especially in Switzerland. Last year, I was able to travel to get some winter sun to avoid being at home all winter. This year, I’ll spending more time at home, so it makes sense to cozy up my space a bit more. That way I have something to look forward to this winter.
The aim for decorating my flat was to have a warm and cozy atmosphere that felt peaceful all year round. There are some simple things that are always at home to create that atmosphere immediately. Winter is character-building season, especially as a powerlifting and wellness girlie. By making sure that your space has everything that you need to promote essential rest and recovery is paramount. Training during the winter is not for the weak. At the same time, you want to come back to a space that envelopes you with warmth.
Simple Cozy Winter Ideas
Here’s the thing, adding simple cozy winter vibes here and there doesn’t even have to cost a fortune. You probably have some of these things at home already. Or you need to buy something small to elevate the space. When I was younger I dreamed about having a fireplace in my first house. Currently I live in a flat that unfortunately does not come with a fireplace. However, you can find classic fireplace videos on both Netflix and YouTube to create that warmth and cozy atmosphere. That video is keeping me company as I write this post. It may not be the real thing, but it is the closest thing that I have to it and it works for me.

Add Some Candles
Once it hits autumn, I start my search for seasonal candles. I look for ones that are going to brighten up my flat. In addition, they need to add the scent of the season to my space. There is something about that glow of a candlelight flickering in any room that just makes me feel so good. The gentle warmth that comes from a candle makes my home feel more inviting and cozy during the winter months.
I usually stick to soy wax scented candles as they are more eco-friendly, biodegradable and sustainable for the planet. Most of my candles have been from Black owned businesses in the past such as Brûler Candles, and Aya Aromas. This year I bought some candles a little closer to home. A friend of mine had bought me a candle from Rituals for one of my birthdays and I fell in love with that scent instantaneously.
Spread the Coziness by Upgrading Your Beddings
I consider a bedroom upgrade as one of those little luxuries that you cannot miss out on! I have been dedicated to decorating my bedroom into a sleep sanctuary for as long as I can remember. This summer I took a step in the right direction by upgrading my beddings, and let me tell you, I feel like I’m sleeping on clouds every night! If you have never tried it, I recommend buying pillow protectors. You will not regret it. Your bed will feel like a hotel bed due to the softness and luxuriousness. When we talk about spreading the simple cozy atmosphere for the winter at home, it should not be exclusive to just the living room. Those pockets of self care can happen anywhere in your space and your bedroom is one of those places that needs the extra TLC.
As a powerlifter and wellness girlie, sleep is one of the most underrated tools when it comes making progress and seeing results. If getting quality sleep night by night is something that you struggle with, give yourself a goal to create your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary. Then focus on creating an evening routine that helps you to wind down to go to bed. I’m not going to sugar coat this because I find it very difficult to stay on top of my evening routine. The aim is progress over perfection, so try your best.
Add An Area Rug
The same way that pillows and throw blankets can add warmth into your space, a rug can add some coziness during the winter season too. I bought my rug in 2021 from IKEA and it is still super cozy. It really elevates my living room because it is textured. I’m hoping to buy one for the bedroom to add a little more warmth in there as I’m realising that having only wooden floors is not appealing to me anymore.
I think what is also lovely about rugs is that you can layer them to make it more visual and more textured. Since it is winter and we naturally layer our clothing, the layering of the rugs implies additional warmth.
Add Some Plants
I’m pretty sure that everyone loves all the green that comes with the Christmas season as much as I do. When you take all the decor down, I’m sure that it feels pretty cold and lifeless inside. That is one of the reasons that I have plants surrounding my living room, to bring some life into my home. If you are prone to killing plants, you may want to invest in some faux plants and there is nothing wrong with that. If you’ve never had a plant and want to enter into your plant girl era, this could double up as a goal for you this winter.
I believe I’ve had my two yucca plants for five years and my two snake plants for four years. Something that I like to do is move them around the flat every couple of years. It gives my space a new perspective and they are so good for the air in your home.
Keep The Christmas Lights For A Cozy Glow
When I first moved into this flat, I would only turn on one light to illuminate the living room and the dining room. Over time, I realised that having more lights makes the room feel more inviting, especially as I work from home. Once I got my Christmas lights for my tree last year, it filled my home with a cozy ambiance. Adding additional lamps and changing up the light fixtures have been on my list for such a long time. I keep on putting that off for some reason. To ensure that there is more light during the gloomy winter season, I’ve decided to keep my Christmas lights up for the whole season.
You don’t need to have a tree to keep the Christmas lights up. You can hang them around the TV stand, a bookshelf or somewhere in the living room.
By adding these different approaches to your home during the winter season, you may find ways to enjoy it instead of dreading the gloom and grey that comes with it.
