One of the first things I do when I wake up is drink 500ml of water. Even if I don’t feel thirsty (after 8 hours of sleep), I still drink it. I feel that drinking water activates my body, signalling that I am awake and ready for the day.
On average, an adult human being contains 60% of water. Most of that water is inside our cells. The other places that water can be found is the space between the cells and inside our blood. Therefore, the more muscular your body is, the more water it has. Thus, the more fat you hold in your body, the less water it has. There is a reason why the saying says that water is life.
Benefits of Drinking Water
Our bodies use water to regulate our temperature and maintain bodily functions such as digestion and breathing. It protects our tissues, spinal cord, and joints. It prevents us from becoming dehydrated.
Our kidneys and liver do such an amazing job flushing out the toxins and waste from our bodies. If we do not drink a sufficient amount of water, we would be failing our bodies to their job efficiently.
Drinking water is not only optimal for our brain, our kidneys but also for our overall health goals. Treating our body with care on the inside will manifest and show on the outside through our skin, our hair, our nails etc.
How much water do we need?
That really depends on each individual’s lifestyle and environmental factors such as the climate that we live in, how physically active we are, if we are experiencing an illness or health problems. According to a report by the Institute of Medicine of Natural Academies, we should drink water when we are thirsty. The CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention) recommend do the same thing as well as having a drink with each of our meals.
A clear sign to know whether or not you are drinking enough water is by looking at your urine. If it is clear, you are in the green. If it is dark, you are dehydrated.
