A First Time Winter’s Day Trip To Liechtenstein Guide

January is a long month for everyone. It’s the middle of winter and pay-day seems to be coming slower than usual. If you are not an avid winter sportsperson, winter can seem like a never-ending season.

Learning from my previous experiences, snuggling myself in my blankets and preparing for hibernation is not the only way to enjoy the month. I decided to change that around and travel. I never travel during the winter. A thought of changing the status quo came to me during the last days of 2018. Here I was ready to snuggle myself in layers of clothing and go for a day trip to the little country of Liechtenstein.

One of my many goals this year is to travel to five new cities and/or five new countries. I’m sure that you’ve heard the cliché saying that “Travel is the only thing that you buy that makes you richer”. Whoever said that was not lying. I love travelling as much as I love training and food. Travelling is like art. It starts as an empty canvas. Each place you travel to is a stroke on the canvas unravelling stories and moments that you captured through your eyes. That’s why I love to travel. I get to different parts of the world through my eyes and not through the lens captured by society.

If you are not a fan of travelling or hesitant to do it, start out small. Travel to a new city or town in your country. I hope that this post and the many travel ones coming this year inspire you to see the world through your own lenses.

Where Is Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein, a country that is small yet quaint decorated with historical and contemporary architecture designs. Blending the old and the new like the old church perched in the middle of the city sounding melodies at each hour as if I was hearing the Notre Dame. A royal family on the high plains in Vaduz castle with heavy snow falling on the country and painting a winter wonderland on that cold Saturday. I was in you for a day and I enjoyed learning and seeing you.

Getting There

My sister and I took a 4 hour train and bus ride from Lausanne, Switzerland. We past through Zürich and Sargans. Then hopped on a bus from Sargans to Vaduz, the capital city of Liechtenstein. Our trip there was slightly delayed due to the unexpected snowfall that hit us in French-speaking part of Switzerland. Early afternoon, we arrived at Vaduz and visited the Liechtenstein National Museum and the Liechtenstein Treasure Chamber.

After finishing all the tourist aspects of the city, we stopped over at Restaurant Engel Vaduz, a regional and Asian restaurant in Old Town. We started our meal with the classic garlic bread with olive oil. Our main was the Red Curry with Chicken served with Jasmine Rice. For dessert, we went with a traditional Austrian dessert, Apple strudel.

Liechtenstein, you are still a mystery to me. I will be back one day in the summer to experience all of you wholeheartedly.

Until next time,

Folakemi Olamide 💓
